10 BIGGEST DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE ORIGINAL DRAGON BALL AND DRAGON BALL Z

All fans of the Dragon Ball franchise adore both Dragon Ball, and Dragon Ball Z. They are both great and are hugely important to the story. But, there are some vast differences between the two series. Only fans who have watched both would know, and in this post, I’ve pointed out the ones that stand out quite a lot.
10. Dragon Ball was aimed at a different audience
Dragon Ball began with a tinge of comedy to it. However, as it progressed, the plot got darker, and fights became a lot more serious. In Dragon Ball Z, fights were all that mattered, and there was some gore in there as well.
9. Power levels didn’t matter
Back in Dragon Ball, there was not really a solid concept of Power levels. It was only when the Saiyans came to Earth that the series began focusing on power levels. Dragon Ball was much more simple in comparisons, and Goku didn’t even win most of the times.
8. Humans became weak in Dragon Ball Z
Back in Dragon Ball, humans were actually very powerful. Characters like Tien, and Krillin were considered strong, and comparable to Goku. However, in Dragon Ball Z, Saiyans were the focus. Slowly, characters like Tien, Yamcha, and Krillin were made into a joke, and Goku and the others reached levels where no human could even touch them.
7. Dragon Balls were more relevant
Dragon Balls were a lot more relevant in Dragon Ball. Yes. In Dragon Ball Z, after the Freeza Saga, they don’t really matter, and only came up with the damage needed to be fixed. They became a lot easy to find, and in Battle of Gods, Bulma gave them away as a prize! That’s not a bad thing, but for a show called Dragon Ball Z, you’d expect it to have a little more importance.
6. There were no Aliens
Since Dragon Ball was set in a time before the invasion of Saiyans on Earth, there was no indication that people like Saiyans existed. It wasn’t until Raditz came that we found out about them. Suddenly, the story changed completely, and Goku went to places like Namek which he had never heard about.
5. Dragon Ball Z’s Villains were much more powerful
At the beginning of Dragon Ball Z, Goku was very weak compared to the Saiyans, and others lurking in space. Naturally, since the rest were way more powerful than him, they made formidable enemies. Dragon Ball didn’t really have that, and everyone was more or less equally weak in comparison to Dragon Ball Z.
4. Death mattered in Dragon Ball
Back in Dragon Ball, characters initially wanted the Dragon Balls for reasons other than reviving someone. That soon changed, and in Dragon Ball Z, that had become the primary reason for using the Dragon Balls. There were limitations to Shenron in Dragon Ball, so deaths were a lot more serious. Right now, anyone can be wished back so there’s no reason to even worry.
3. Goku was beatable
Back in Dragon Ball, you could actually see Goku losing battles. This is what made him come back stronger, and then pull off a victory. In Dragon Ball Z, that changed quickly, and Goku went on to achieve powers that nobody in his Universe was even close to. In Battle or Gods, he reached God level, and can now only be beaten by other Gods, or God level characters, based on whether their power level is higher or lower than him.
2. The Importance of Martial Arts Tournaments

Back in Dragon Ball, Tournaments were a lot more fun, and they actually meant something. They showed us how far each character had come after their training. In Dragon Ball Z, the tournaments lost their value, and every Z fighter had to hold back. So, basically it didn’t matter who won the Tournament, because that wasn’t really the point of any arc anyway.

1. Dragon Ball Z was more popular
I don’t think anyone would argue Dragon Ball was more popular. Sure, some might like Dragon Ball better than Dragon Ball Z, and that’s fine, but Dragon Ball Z had such a huge fan base, and it was also the introduction to the world of anime and manga to many people out there. So, in terms of popularity, Dragon Ball Z definitely trumps Dragon Ball.
